My Favorite Show

By Frank Marino, star of Divas Las Vegas at Imperial Palace

Marino is the longest-running headliner in town. Knowing a little something about showmanship, Marino—or should we say “Joan Rivers”—is the perfect person to kick off this column, in which people who work in showbiz recommend their favorite shows. After 25 years at the Riviera, Marino has moved to the Imperial Palace. Catch the grand opening Feb. 25, where he’ll be presented with his second star on the Las Vegas Walk of Fame.

My favorite show would be a tie between Cher at Caesars Palace and Donny & Marie at Flamingo. I prefer old-fashioned headliners to production shows. I miss the good, old days when I first opened in Las Vegas, looking out my dressing room window and seeing on the marquee Diana Ross, Ann-Margret and Frank Sinatra. What I like about both shows is that they take a little nostalgia, but they made it trendy enough for the new generation: Cher by having a hit song every decade for the last 40 years. Donny & Marie by reinventing themselves in Dancing With the Stars and singing pop music of today along their original hit songs. I’m a big fan of staying power.
