Seven Questions for Jason Giambi from the people on the streets of Las Vegas:
Who was your hero growing up?
Mickey Mantle. He was my dad’s favorite player too.
What is the most frustrating thing about being a professional athlete?
I guess how much people do not acknowledge the work we put in on game day, its not just pre-season. Fans sometimes think we turn up at 7pm and walk out and play, it’s not like that. The day starts at 3pm, grounders, batting practice, etc. So, I suppose people misconceptions about game day and the work involved before the first pitch.
Your brother made a very high profile out in a game for the A’s versus the Yankees back in the day, are you someone who puts an arm round a shoulder to comfort someone, or do you go in guns blazing asking what the fuck happened out there?
Arm round the shoulder. I try to find out what the thought processes were on a play, and then help someone understand it’s over. I told him, people are gonna ask you about it, but that’s the decision you made at the time, you gotta be allright with it.
When the Yankees won the World Series the year after you left, were you happy for your teammates or pissed because you missed out on a ring?
I was pumped for those guys, I sweated with those guys, and I was totally excited for them.
Who’s the funniest player you’ve ever experienced in the locker room?
Does Jason think he could be an Olympic Curler?
I really don’t know enough about it, but I think I can bowl straight so I think I got half a chance!
You are on a desert island. You can either have A) a full bar which renews itself automatically and a dirt bike, or B) a new woman delivered to the island every week. Which is it?
(Laughs) I gotta go with A. Although maybe … No, A for sure! Yeah, definitely A.
