There you are at the bar, empty beer prominently in front of you, a signal to your server that, yes, you are ready for another. But you are being ignored. The place is busy, you didn’t tip last time, you haven’t showered—the reasons are as endless as your thirst. Bottom line: Your glass is staying empty way too long.
There’s another way. It’s called the DraftMaster, and it’s a table that allows you to pre-purchase your beers and pour them out as you wish from a tap right in front of you. DraftMaster tables, already popular in Ireland, first appeared in Strip-area pubs in July, including Nine Fine Irishmen, McFadden’s and Mandalay Bay’s sports book. With a new installation at Shakespeare’s Grille & Pub, 790 Coronado Center Dr., they are now officially going off-Strip as well.
“People, when they first come in, they think it’s a prop,” says Karen Fulton, Shakespeare’s co-owner. But they soon learn that it is indeed real, and all they have to do is buy the beer from the bartender or server—in pints or by the dollar amount, at the same price you’d get from a server—sit down and start pouring. The table seats six to eight, so it’s good for gathering a crowd watching football. The kegs are contained inside the unit, and the tap is controlled electronically so you only get what you paid for. No keg parties allowed.
At Shakespeare’s you can get any kind of beer you want out of the table’s two taps, as long as you want a Guinness or a Harp. The tables are expensive—about $7,800 for the table and another $2,000 for the wireless controller—which is why you’ll only find one at the pub for now.
