Six honorees were recognized at the Nov. 18 Philanthropy Awards luncheon, presented by the Association of Fundraising Professionals of Las Vegas. Recognized were Dr. Randal Peoples of the St. Rose Health Foundation, Anna Robins of Keep Memory Alive, Dr. Jonathan Bernstein of Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases, Dr. John Gallagher of Gallagher & Associates, Eagle Scout Christopher Glaser for his efforts on behalf of Operation School Bell and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Southern Nevada chapter.

The Clark County School District is enormous: 309,000 students as of the 2009-2010 school year, making it the fifth largest in the country; 8,000 square miles of territory, places as far flung as Mesquite and Laughlin; a budget of nearly $2 billion. So in this era of antipathy toward big government, it’s only natural to wonder whether we should break up the district into much smaller parts.
