Injured BMX riders Ty Pinney and TJ Lavin got a big boost in their recovery with help from mixed martial arts, because sometimes life isn’t just about rending your opponents limb from limb; sometimes it’s about putting people back together. Then getting back to the business of rending people limb from limb.
UFC President Dana White hosted a night at Vanity on Dec. 3 where door proceeds and a silent auction helped raise more than $500,000 for the two riders, injured within a day of each other in October. Lavin has since been discharged from the hospital to recover, while Pinney remains in a rehabilitation facility.
UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta donated his own artwork for the auction, and items as diverse as an autographed bike from Lavin, a day at Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory or hitting instruction from Shane Victorino were up for grabs.
Jason Giambi, Joe Rogan, fighters Vitor Belfort and Forrest Griffin, and ring girl and model Arianny Celeste were some of the star power for the night, as was David Spade, who cut a check for $10,000.
