A rundown of the latest makeup trends for 2011

When it comes to makeup trends, the runways of New York, Paris, Milan and beyond are our inspiration for what will be hot during a particular season. The spring/summer 2011 shows have forecasted a bright and flawless look. Designers and their makeup teams primarily focused on one facial feature to highlight. If dramatic eyes were the center point, the lips and skin were neutral, and if the lips were the focus, the eyes and skin were flawless and bright. Here are the top trends and the designers who embraced them.

Bold lips

One of the most popular runway trends continued to be bold lips. Designers couldn’t get enough of a shocking pout. Some matte, others glossy but they were packed with bright hues. From hot pink to blue and everything in between, this was the season of lips.

Dark lips

Although Halloween is long gone and the vampires have all retreated back to their caves, dark lips are still everywhere. French designers channeled their dark side with maroon and deep red shades. This trend can best be achieved using a dark lip stain, which will give you the richness but won’t overwhelm your makeup.

Natural makeup

The secret to natural makeup is not necessarily using less makeup but emphasizing textures and colors to enhance your features. The main goal is to give the skin the appearance of a healthy glow. Soft apricot, taupe and brown are great colors for the eyes. Sculpt cheeks with a soft pink or peach blush and finish with a simple lip balm or light stain.

Iridescent smoky eyes

For a sultry eye, designers chose dark, shimmer shadows in olive green, purple and black. These looks focused heavily on eyeliner and mascara, leaving the skin and lips natural and dewy. For this look, blend colors together to create texture and color.

Rainbow sherbet eyes

Spring is always the perfect time to bring color in your makeup. This year’s trend focuses on bright matte eye shadows covering the entire lid. This look is very doll-like. At several shows, makeup artists used unconventional methods to get the color to really pop, including lipstick and paint.

Cara Abrahams

What she’s wearing now: Elizabeth and James tuxedo jacket, Theory tank, Torn by Ronny Kobo skirt, Michael Kors watch, David Yurman bracelet and Steve Madden satin pumps. Despite having a great sense of style, Abrahams often feels the heat when it comes to getting dressed for an event. “I never want to wear the same outfit twice,” she says. “As a result, dresses are usually my go-to piece for events as they are so versatile and can transition from a day to night look with just switching out a few accessories.”
