Dear, Sweet Grandmama

Grandmama is back! For those of you not old enough to remember, after former UNLV basketball great Larry Johnson was drafted No. 1 overall by the Charlotte Hornets in the 1991 NBA Draft, he signed a contract with Converse to peddle shoes. The company created an ad campaign in which Johnson donned a dress and wig and ruled the court as Grandmama.

The character is now returning with Grandmama’s Sweet Southern Tea, the first in a new line of beverages by Johnson. It’s available in select parts of the country, although Las Vegas isn’t yet one of them. A strawberry lemonade-flavored beverage, Atomic Dogg Super Soda, is planned for a nationwide launch.

A national ad campaign reprising Johnson’s role as Grandmama is in the works, and will debut soon for the sweet tea, which was inspired by Johnson’s childhood in Texas and his Converse character. Production of the beverage is based in Tampa, Fla., and it is being marketed and distributed by Hall of Fame Beverages.

Maybe Johnson can next create Tark the Shark soda that can only be consumed by sucking on a towel.

Michael Vick? Gone. Drew Brees? Gone. Tom Brady and Peyton Manning? Gone and gone. Mark Sanchez and Jay Cutler? One win away from the Super Bowl. Somebody please wake me up from this nightmare before something really scary happens—like Steven Tyler showing up on my TV as a judge for a karaoke contest. (What? That’s real, too? Oh, come on!)
