The Way Back (PG-13)

This is a meticulous character study of seven escapees from a World War II Russian gulag. Based on Slavomir Rawicz’s 1956 memoir, the film chronicles their 4,500-mile hike across Siberia, Mongolia and the Gobi desert to India. Jim Sturgess gives a powerful performance as the Polish group leader. There’s a stoic American (Ed Harris), a ruthless Russian gangster (Colin Farrell) and a girl (Ronan Saoirse) who joins them along the way.
