The Lincoln Lawyer (R)

★★★☆☆

Matthew McConaughey is hotshot Los Angeles defense attorney Mick who uses his vintage Lincoln Continental as an office. He meets his match in the form of Louis (Ryan Phillippe), a Beverly Hills brat accused of trying to murder a prostitute. Phillippe is ideally cast but isn’t given enough screen time to fully flesh out his character. This is a thoroughly entertaining mystery thriller that leaves you wanting more. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it turn into a franchise.

Shocked and Awed by Swamplandia!

By M. Scott Krause

Karen Russell’s debut novel, Swamplandia! (Alfred A. Knopf, $25), is both magical and menacing. It’s the story of the Bigtree family, a group of eccentrics who run an alligator-themed amusement park in Florida. The park’s main attraction is the family matriarch—Hilola Bigtree—who wrestles alligators while her husband, Chief Bigtree, works both the spotlight and the microphone.
