Rango (PG)

Endearingly odd and thoroughly entertaining, Rango is the type of animated feature you might expect from the Coen brothers if they hijacked Pixar. Johnny Depp voices the titular lizard, a bizarre hero who finds himself playing sheriff in a dusty town populated by Labyrinth-ian vermin after his aquarium shatters on a stretch of desert highway. The plot is accessible to kids, but the dialogue and humor is aimed at adults, making this looney ’toon genuinely fun for the whole family.

Shocked and Awed by Swamplandia!

By M. Scott Krause

Karen Russell’s debut novel, Swamplandia! (Alfred A. Knopf, $25), is both magical and menacing. It’s the story of the Bigtree family, a group of eccentrics who run an alligator-themed amusement park in Florida. The park’s main attraction is the family matriarch—Hilola Bigtree—who wrestles alligators while her husband, Chief Bigtree, works both the spotlight and the microphone.
