Sucker Punch (PG-13)

Only the rarest of movies is given a title that perfectly encapsulates the experience of watching it, but sitting through Sucker Punch, a ludicrous fantasy from 300 director Zack Snyder involving underage prostitutes fighting droids and dragons, really is like being attacked and beaten without any means of defending yourself. While you’re not busy looking for the nearest exit, you can ruminate on how decent actors such as Carla Gugino, Abbie Cornish and Jon Hamm wound up in this mess.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (PG)

This second installment in the Wimpy Kid franchise finds Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon) sparring with his older brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick). The siblings’ parents (Steve Zahn and Rachael Harris) offer “mom-bucks” for every trouble-free hour the boys spend together. Childhood ambition is the driving force in a story about how the brothers mutually discover how to help one another. Rodrick Rules might not be high art, but it is a perfectly sound kid’s movie.
