Moms eat free

I’ve never liked eating holiday meals in a casino restaurant. The spreads they put together are good and usually represent a value, but something about spending Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter in a casino just doesn’t seem quite right. Mother’s Day, on the other hand, is different. Eating out means that Mom doesn’t have to cook, and that’s the way it should be.

It’s not a question of where special Mother’s Day meals will be available. They’ll be everywhere. But some are better than others. One traditional Mother’s Day play is Hugo’s Cellar at the Four Queens. Hugo’s has been around for years and is always a hot ticket for both Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day. Other good choices include the non-casino Rosemary’s and Vintner Grill on the west side of town, or Table 34 on the east. In the casinos, many buffets will add a special Mother’s Day touch to their brunches. The deals are sure to be good, so you really can’t go wrong. But this year there’s something especially strong going on in five good restaurants where mothers eat for free. In each of the deals below, there has to be a paying guest along, but that’s more than a fair trade.

The first is P.J. Clarke’s in the Forum Shops at Caesars. This new bar/restaurant out of New York is swanky and has excellent food, but it’s also expensive and the offer is capped at $35, so Mom might not get off completely free here.

The second comes from The Flame Steakhouse at El Cortez. Formerly Roberta’s, The Flame is one of Las Vegas’ iconic “value-gourmet” houses, where you can get steaks and seafood at prices that you just don’t find in the fancy new joints. There are no restrictions on this deal that I can see.

Offers three, four and five come from three restaurants in one casino. The Mirage is treating moms to $50 prix fixe dinners in Kokomo’s (steaks and seafood), Onda (Italian), or Fin (Chinese). These are three quality choices (I think I’d go with Onda). This isn’t something that all the MGM Resorts International casinos are doing, so credit goes specifically to The Mirage for this one. Nice.

Happy Mother’s Day to mine, as well as to all of yours.
