Altitude Adjustment

Where to get up, up and away from it all

It’s getting hot out here. So take off (almost) all your clothes and discover some of Vegas’ very well-situated elevated terraces, patios and pool decks—breezy places with some altitude. C’mon, all the cool kids are doing it!

Sitting pretty atop the Sugar Factory American Brasserie at Paris, Chateau Beer Garden (10 a.m. daily, no cover, 331-5100) offers cabanas and shade during the day and transforms into the Chateau Nightclub terrace when the club opens. Not far away, perched between the legs of Paris’ Eiffel Tower, Chateau Gardens (776-7770) is scheduled for a mid-summer grand opening and will function as the top level of Chateau Nightclub. The Strip’s newest outdoor party place will host the Under the Eiffel Tower outdoor concert series.

The Mediterranean-style Azure Luxury Pool (11 a.m.-6 p.m. Fri-Sun, $20 cover, local ladies free, 767-3724) sits on the third floor at the Palazzo, overlooking the Strip. Beat the heat at Azure’s three pools by arriving right at opening or catch the last two hours when the topiaries form long shadows after 4 p.m. Enhance the breeze by letting the pool staff mist you with Evian or get a cold-stone massage and menthol foot mask by Canyon Ranch SpaClub.

Four stories above the Strip, Tao Beach (10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily, locals always free, 388-8588) occupies a breezy corner of the Venetian pool area. Aside from the DJ booth and the umbrellas by the bar, this petite Balinese-inspired oasis receives full sun all day long, so you’ll want to book an air-conditioned cabana or canopied day bed to also get some shade. When the sun goes down, Tao Beach becomes an extension of Tao Nightclub.

The Palms Place Pool (9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily, no cover, 942-7777), outside Simon at Palms Place, is open only to hotel guests and residents. However, if you visit Simon restaurant for Sunday brunch, you can take advantage of this luxurious sixth-floor wind tunnel while you sip bottomless Bloody Marys and dip toes. Book a cabana Sundays and receive two brunches free!

Marquee Dayclub (10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. daily, no cover Mon-Thu; $20 men Fri and Sun; $30 men Sat, local ladies always free, 333-9000) reigns supreme from the 17th floor of the Cosmopolitan. Here, dappled shade begins to appear about 2:30 p.m., when the sun settles behind Vdara. All day long, take shelter around the two outdoor bars or in the gaming areas, or visit at night, when the pool deck becomes an extension of Marquee Nightclub.
