How to perfect a sunless tan

With the weather heating up, it’s time to get that sun-kissed bronze skin. Self-tanner is a great alternative to tanning beds and spray tans.

Because of the nature of the formula, the color develops on the skin instead of giving you an orange tint that can look fake and leave streaks. With the right product and the knowledge of how to apply it, self-tanner will be your new best friend this summer. My product of choice is Too Faced Tanning Bed in a Tube, which is available for $25 at Sephora Town Square. The first step to a great tan is to exfoliate well in the shower. Scrub from the neck all the way down to the feet and in between the toes. Second, apply light moisturizer over your entire body, focusing on dry areas such as your elbows, knees, and knuckles. Put latex gloves on to ensure a clean application of the self-tanning lotion—no one wants orange hands. Start at the ankles and work your way up the body, blending the solution with your hands. Be sure to buff out any streaks with your palms and you will want to avoid getting it in between your toes and fingers. Then use a baby wipe to remove the excess.

To keep the glow going, continue to moisturize each day and add small amounts of the tanner to your face lotion. This formula is not meant for the face, so it’s best to mix a liquid bronzer in with your foundation so that your face matches the rest of your body.
