Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (PG-13)

Despite the subtitle, what’s strange about the diversions on offer here? Director Rob Marshall’s effort reminds us that Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) really was a good time in the first installments of this franchise. The fountain of youth serves as the booty here, and its eternal riches are being pursued by Sparrow, Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), a rogue Spanish pirate (Penelope Cruz) and Blackbeard (Ian McShane). Marshall doesn’t handle the action well, and Depp gets overexposed and underwritten.

If you’ve been hanging out at The Beat Coffeehouse inside the downtown Emergency Arts building lately, you’ve probably seen her. She’s the lady in a sundress sitting on the floor, creating rapid-fire watercolor portraits of local characters such as artist Jerry Misko and writer/comics guy/drummer Pj Perez. She chitchats with her subjects all the while, sometimes discarding a paper canvas after a few strokes, at other times laboring intensively over a portrait as if it were a math formula.
