Mr. Popper’s Penguins

(PG)  ★★★☆☆

The 1930s children’s book gets a sleek upgrade courtesy of Mean Girls director Mark Waters and star Jim Carrey, who manages to keep his rubbery face muzzled for most of this perfectly pleasant and predictable adaptation. Kids will love repeated scenes involving penguin poop, but parents won’t need a hip flask to get through the proceedings—the mark of a good family film if we ever saw one.

Paul McCartney

By Sean DeFrank

The Hofner bass, the Beatle boots, even the still-shaggy hair—it’s all classic Paul McCartney. And it was all there June 10 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena for the last stop on his Up and Coming Tour. McCartney turns 69 on June 18, but he still performed an energetic 2 1/2-hour set ripe with Beatles classics, Wings hits and a few favorites from his solo albums. He even welcomed the crowd with Beatles fan-favorite “Magical Mystery Tour,” rather than one of his lesser-known songs as he’s been known to do.
