Mr. Popper’s Penguins

(PG)  ★★★☆☆

The 1930s children’s book gets a sleek upgrade courtesy of Mean Girls director Mark Waters and star Jim Carrey, who manages to keep his rubbery face muzzled for most of this perfectly pleasant and predictable adaptation. Kids will love repeated scenes involving penguin poop, but parents won’t need a hip flask to get through the proceedings—the mark of a good family film if we ever saw one.

FRACTURES AND CHARM. I’m reading some reviews on the Bruno Mars (pictured) and Janelle Monae show that’s coming to the Pearl on June 16 ($45 - $87), and I swear to you they’re like butter on the eyeballs. “[Mars] oozes confidence and charm … [Monae’s set had] energy and aplomb,” wrote The Oregonian’s Robert Ham of the duo’s June 4 show in Portland. Tickets to the Vegas show are sold out, but if you wish on Monae’s Grace Jones-like pompadour, you may get lucky.
