This morning, Trifecta Gallery hosted its first-ever early-morning art opening. A crowd of surprisingly punctual art lovers showed up at 7 a.m. to eat real pancakes while viewing an installation of larger-than-life art pancakes. Todd + Bryan’s Pancake Bed and Breakfast, a collaboration between Todd VonBastiaans and Bryan McCarthy, is called a “retail nstallation.” It’s art, but it’s also a practical product, VonBastiaans explains. The fabric-and-memory-foam pancakes can be stacked to create an unusual end table, chair, ottoman or anything else you can think of. Each pancake retails for $500-$650, depending on size. And if you buy a stack, you get a free butter pat pillow, which comes in your choice of butter, margarine or foil.
How they made them: They searched Las Vegas’ breakfast joints for the most pancake-y pancakes, settling upon Blueberry Hill. They took photos of 28 different pancakes, top and bottom. Then they had the photos digitally printed on recycled fabric and filled them with memory foam to get that pancake-y feel. Yum.
