Cars 2 (G)

★★★☆☆

Talking cars have come a long way since Knight Rider, but even Pixar, animation’s reigning heavyweight, can’t quite make them A-list. In this overstuffed sequel to the 2006 hit, Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Tow Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) leave Radiator Springs for Tokyo, Italy and England to participate in a World Grand Prix. A James Bond-esque subplot involving espionage is flashy and fun, but seems like overcompensation for relatively unmemorable characters.

Deep Purple

By Sean DeFrank

It’s not exactly a novel idea for a veteran rock band to go on tour accompanied by an orchestra. But Deep Purple executed the idea first—and long ago—playing with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1969. The band revisited the concept at its June 23 show at the Pearl, part of a three-week North American tour, but despite the 30-piece symphony sitting behind them, Purple kept the volume cranked up to 11.
