Larry Crowne

(PG-13) ★☆☆☆☆

This Tom Hanks-directed (and co-produced and co-written) rom-com is the neediest movie of the year, and one of the phoniest. Julia Roberts plays a washed-up community college instructor. Hanks plays a washed-up, laid-off divorcee who returns to school and winds up in guess who’s class. The problem here is the script, co-written by Nia Vardalos of My Big Fat Greek Wedding fame. It’s dull, unfunny and too generic to be enjoyable. I like Hanks and Roberts in general, but this reeks of A-list slumming.

Cars 2 (G)

Talking cars have come a long way since Knight Rider, but even Pixar, animation’s reigning heavyweight, can’t quite make them A-list. In this overstuffed sequel to the 2006 hit, Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and Tow Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) leave Radiator Springs for Tokyo, Italy and England to participate in a World Grand Prix. A James Bond-esque subplot involving espionage is flashy and fun, but seems like overcompensation for relatively unmemorable characters.
