Higher Ground

(R) ★★★☆☆

Vera Farmiga directs and stars in this independent film about a woman who confronts the limitations of her life and then redefines it completely. The film doesn’t state things directly, but we sense what is happening to her character, Corinne, and how some turn to fundamentalism for complex and interconnected reasons. Corinne’s on a mission, but its particulars elude her, which makes her path an unpredictable and rewarding one.

Fright Night

Hey Twihards—real vampires don’t sparkle in the sunlight, they watch Bravo reality shows in the desert. At least, they do in Fright Night, a funny and frothy (if not truly frightening) remake of the 1985 vamp-camp classic. Colin Farrell has a ball in the showy role of Jerry, a creature of the night who terrorizes a Las Vegas suburb. And up-and-comer Anton Yelchin makes an adorable foil for the forces of darkness. Despite its tepid terror, this Fright’s got some bite.
