Contagion

(R) ★★☆☆☆

If you’ve ever wanted to see Gwyneth Paltrow die a horrible death, you’ll love Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion … for the first 10 minutes, anyway. The rest of this pandemic virus disaster flick falls flat, thanks to an overstuffed cast (Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet, Marion Cottilard) without much to do and a plot that’s more concerned with its complex intersections than with creating a real sense of fear.

Seven Days in Utopia

By Tribune Media Services

A young golfer has a meltdown in the middle of a tournament, followed by seven days of perspective-patching among mild-mannered, God-fearing folk in rural Texas. Faith and “fore” walk hand-in-hand in this soft-centered, faith-based drama starring Lucas Black of Friday Night Lights. The film lacks surprises and tension, as we work our way down the middle of the fairway toward the predictable climactic finish.
