Contagion

(R) ★★☆☆☆

If you’ve ever wanted to see Gwyneth Paltrow die a horrible death, you’ll love Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion … for the first 10 minutes, anyway. The rest of this pandemic virus disaster flick falls flat, thanks to an overstuffed cast (Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet, Marion Cottilard) without much to do and a plot that’s more concerned with its complex intersections than with creating a real sense of fear.

The Debt

By Tribune Media Services

A chaotic remake of the 2007 Israeli drama Ha-Hov, The Debt contains enough narrative-stuffing for three pictures. The film toggles between two time sequences. In 1997, three veterans of Israel’s secret service revisit the truth behind their roughest assignment when the daughter of the agent played by Helen Mirren publishes a book about her mother and what happened in East Berlin. When Mirren, Tom Wilkinson, Ciarán Hinds and breakout actress Jessica Chastain can’t save this political thriller, you know it’s off.
