Dolphin Tale

(PG) ★★★☆☆

This heartwarmer based on a true story follows the tailless dolphin Winter (played by Winter) through all sorts of adversity alongside its human protectors, notably the 11-year-old Sawyer (Nathan Gamble). What the film lacks in digital effects, it makes up for with some ambitious storylines and, of course, Morgan Freeman as a prosthetics specialist. Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr. provide solid, low-pressure performances, in contrast to the film’s high-pressure peril.

Drive

By Tribune Media Services

This avenging-angel thriller begins well and ends in a muddle. Ryan Gosling plays Driver, a loner stunt/getaway driver. The superb Carey Mulligan plays a waitress who lives down the hall from Driver and whose husband is due out of prison soon. How Driver becomes part of a troubled family unit, and how he becomes the target of mobsters (Albert Brooks, Ron Perlman) form the crisscrossing roads of the narrative.
