Brenna Mishlove, 13

Scholar, ballroom dancer

Her story: In first grade, Brenna’s class could earn a pizza party for every 250 books they read. Being an overachiever since birth, she read 1,000 books that year, ensuring that her class got four pizza parties. But it was an SAT test given in the sixth and seventh grades that truly set her apart from her classmates. Her scores, highest among Nevadans in her grade, led to her being invited into the Johns Hopkins Gifted and Talented Program, which works with the most academically talented youths in the nation. She was scheduled to be in eighth grade this year, but at the suggestion of her teachers, she was advanced to ninth grade to allow her to start upper-school studies.

School: The Adelson Educational Campus, freshman

Extras: Brenna is a ballroom dancer who competes around the country, including the Emerald Ball Dancesport Championships in Los Angeles and the Colorado State Ball in Denver. Brenna likes to give back to the community by donating clothes to Shade Tree and helping with toy and food drives. She also sings at benefits, with a repertoire that includes rock ’n’ roll and the national anthem, which she has performed many times for her school.

What she’ll be doing in 10 years: “I would love to be doing something that feeds both my intellectual and artistic sides. Hopefully I will be writing short stories or poetry or novels, and I will still be doing ballroom dance.”

What they’re saying about her: “Brenna is one of the most avid readers I have ever met, and she is serious in her pursuit of educational excellence,” says Paul Schiffman, head of the Adelson Educational Campus.

A lot of people start collecting cars as a way to preserve happier times in their lives. But not John Edward Szeles, better known in these parts as comedian/magician The Amazing Johnathan. Even though he’s a Detroit native, Szeles didn’t get into cars until about 10 years ago when he surprised his wife with a 1957 Porsche. He had it all set up: The car was gift-wrapped, waiting for her in their driveway when they returned to Las Vegas from a trip to Los Angeles. “Unfortunately, that was the time she picked to tell me she wanted a divorce,” he says.
