Five new ways to get dressed this winter

Baby it’s cold outside, and here are five essential items to take your wardrobe from cozy to hip, while keeping your look in tune with the holiday season.

1. Ditch the silk necktie—opt for wool.

Add some depth to your appearance and make a statement with neckwear that falls out of the norm. Say goodbye to silk ties for a few months and make the transition to wool. The rich texture is season-appropriate and will translate into a more buttoned-up look. When you think about it, wearing a silk tie in the winter is the equivalent to donning flip-flops in the snow.

2. Go traditional and invest in a waistcoat (also known as a vest).

Pair a velvet vest with an outdated tux for a cool new look. Select corduroy or tweed to pair with jeans. Need another option? Choose an accent color from your favorite sports coat to complement the waistcoat. This is an investment you won’t regret, as it is one of winter’s all-purpose pieces.

3. Make a smooth move in velvet.

A velvet jacket is one of the most versatile pieces a gentleman can have in his wardrobe. You can dress it up for a black-tie holiday party by pairing it with a festive pocket square and, if you are really daring, an ascot, or downplay it with denim or flannel for an everyday look. Velvet jackets come in an assortment of colors ranging from neutrals to jewel tones so there truly is an option for everyone.

4. Not just for pajamas: flannel.

Donning a flannel suit is one easy way to be a bona fide trendsetter. Flannel’s popularity of late can be attributed to fabric mills that have worked diligently to manufacture a much softer and more luxurious material than in the past. New to flannel suits? You can’t go wrong with a dark gray wool ensemble. But, for those wanting to expand their flannel collection, go for a glen-plaid or a pinstripe suit. Pair it with a cashmere turtleneck or a wool tie.

5. Lace up the look with boots.

Reboot by adding boots into your winter footwear rotation. The sleek ankle cap-toe is for the more conservative guy and the rugged wing-tip boot is for the man about town. So take a step in the right direction and pick up this must-have footwear.
