Men vs. Food

If you’ve ever wondered what chefs do when the burners flicker off for the night, wonder no more. They head down to the Tommy Rocker’s Cantina & Grill parking lot at 4275 Dean Martin Drive from 10 p.m.-4 a.m. for the Saturday Night Truck Stop to sample the offerings of more than five food trucks.

Every other week, organizer Jolene Mannina (formerly of the Sloppy Jo’s truck) pits invited chefs against one another, guest-starring from the truck of their choice in the Back of House Brawl. The Dec. 3 installation will see L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon chef Steve Benjamin and the Mansion at MGM Grand executive chef Jesse Moreno flip a coin at 1:30 a.m. for first truck pick.

Mannina will then reveal five secret ingredients, which the chefs must use to prepare their dish for the judges. At 2:30 a.m., the winner is announced and the party continues with $3 PBR drafts. Earlier that day, Mannina will also launch the first Saturday Afternoon Truck Stop from noon-5 p.m. for those who prefer to grub during the daylight. Follow the event at SNTruckStop on Twitter.

Family Matters

By Grace Bascos

If Italian dining is supposed to be about the camaraderie of eating with family, then Alessandra Madeira has always been in the right place. As chef de cuisine of Bratalian in Anthem, Madeira gets to see more locals and their families, rather than the ebb and flow of strangers that chefs would usually encounter on the Strip. Cooking for and with family has been the path that has led her to her post today.
