My Week With Marilyn

(R) ★★★☆☆

Based on the true story, this film follows the icon Monroe (Michelle Williams) on location for a movie that she made with director/star Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) in England. Olivier’s assistant, Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne) becomes Monroe’s guide, confidant and almost-lover. Williams and Branagh are wonderful, but they can only do so much with what they’re given. Pedestrian staging and direction do little, and all in all, it’s just plain old celebrity fawning.

Sex With a Vampire

The fourth film in the Twilight series reveals a flash or two of real filmmaking (mostly in a suggestively grotesque birthing sequence), enough to save it from pure lousiness. But a significant number of its 117 minutes do seem like hours, and whenever certain actors take the lead and set the pace of the dialogue, time itself begins to crawl backward and the breaking dawn begins to feel like yesterday’s breaking dawn, or last Tuesday’s.
