There’s nothing photographers love more than being asked what kind of camera they use. I don’t think anyone actually believes they could become a Cartier-Bresson if they simply upgrade from a point-and-shoot to an SLR, but the question simply won’t die until sites such as Digital Photography School finally manage to kill it. Composed of helpful tutorials from photographers of every skill level, Digital Photography School is less about the technical side of photography and more about the creative side—it tells you how to build up the talent that allows you to whip out anything from an iPhone to a top-end Nikon or Canon and get a photograph worthy of a gallery wall. Christina Dickson explains how to recognize what makes a photograph great (; Darren Rowse tells how to take great portraits (; and a reader provides tips on how to achieve that “professional pop” in Photoshop ( All are must-reads. Professional photographers like to say the best camera is the one you have with you, and while it’s a nice sentiment, it doesn’t explain how to get those warm and fuzzy feelings from a low-resolution camera phone. This site does, in patient and wholly relatable detail.
