The Art of Fielding

Selected by Jeanne Goodrich, executive director for the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District

I’ve heard three people (two men and a woman) strongly recommend The Art of Fielding (Little, Brown & Co., $26) by Chad Harbach in just the last two days. This beautifully written debut novel describes the intertwined lives of small-college baseball players, faculty, friends and family through strong characters and a plot that carries the reader fluidly through the novel … and wanting more at the end. Don’t let the baseball metaphor worry you. If you love baseball you’ll love it … and if you don’t, you’ll still love this wonderful book. This is strong, very readable literary fiction.

Three Days of Christmas

By Jason Harris and Cindi Moon Reed

The Night Before Christmas: For A Very Terry Christmas, Terry Fator’s stage will be transformed into the Fator Family’s “Living Room.” So does that mean we get to watch his hot wife/onstage assistant Taylor Makakoa play Mrs. Claus? We hope so because she makes ventriloquism fun (7:30 p.m., Terry Fator Theatre at The Mirage, $60-$150, 792-7777). If one puppeteer isn’t enough for you, then run, don’t walk to The Lion King. This fantastic children’s show closes on Dec.
