Before the team’s brief Christmas break even came to a close, UNLV got a couple doses of good news on Monday afternoon.
First, the Rebels (13-2) got a bump in the national polls, moving up from No. 21 to No. 19 in the AP Top 25 poll after blowing past both Louisiana-Monroe and Cal last week.
UNLV also has some company in the AP poll from fellow Mountain West member San Diego State (11-2), who checked in for the first time this season at No. 25. The two will meet in each team’s Mountain West opener at Viejas Arena in San Diego on Jan. 14.
Also, senior forward Chace Stanback was honored by the Mountain West as the league’s Player of the Week, averaging 22 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in the Rebels’ two wins. That included a career-high 29 points and eight 3-pointers made against ULM on Monday night. For the week, he was 16-of-25 from the floor and 11-of-16 from long range.
Stanback is the second Rebel to earn the honor already this season, as Mike Moser took the award in back-to-back weeks to start the year.
UNLV is back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Thomas & Mack Center against Central Arkansas, then will ring in the new year at Hawaii on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. locally, with that game being shown on Cox channel 8.
