Angelina Jolie’s directorial debut (she produced and wrote the screenplay) bravely looks at what women must face when rape becomes an instrument of war. In ’90s Sarajevo, a Bosnian Muslim painter. Ajla (Zana Marjanovic), dances with a Bosnian Serb police officer, Danijel (Goran Kostic). Then a bomb explodes. The two survive, and Danijel has to rescue Ajla from rape and violence by Serbian soldiers. A rough debut, but a brave one. In Bosnian with English subtitles.
