Red Tails

(PG-13) ★★☆☆☆

While the real-life struggles and heroics of the Tuskegee Airmen deserve top-quality portrayals; George Lucas’ long-gestating project isn’t one. Some of the action is fun, but the filmmaking is more in love with its digital effects than with the plight of the characters. In 1944 Italy, a fictional group of African-American pilots finally get to prove their worth. While the actors (Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr.) do all they can, Lucas didn’t get the script right with this one.

It’s the kind of aggressive, unhurried rock he’s dreamed of creating for a decade.
