Everyone’s invited to the whiskey party: connoisseurs and neophytes, men and women… especially the women, who are becoming bourbon, scotch and rye aficionados in greater numbers. Mixologist Max Solano sees it firsthand from his place behind the bar at Delmonico Steakhouse and Table 10.
“Unless Prohibition makes a comeback—which I do not foresee in our lifetime—mixology is here to stay,” Solano says. “We are just merely scratching the surface on things that will come to pass. As the population continues to grow, so will the demand for quality and uniqueness, which will help push the envelope on our end to continue to create.” The Scarlet Starlet is a just one of the nine drinks that comprise Delmonico’s unique whiskey cocktail list. Here, Solano takes the edge off a 10-year-old scotch with flavors of vanilla, citrus, hibiscus and strawberry, but the scotch will not be kept down—the final effect is as striking and powerful a statement as a pair of red patent-leather stilettos.
Fill a coupe or cocktail glass with ice and set aside to chill. In a mixing glass, combine 1½ ounces Glenmorangie 10-Year-Old Original scotch, ½ ounce Navan* vanilla liqueur, ¾ ounce freshly squeezed and strained lime juice, ½ ounce Monin hibiscus syrup, ½ ounce Monin strawberry syrup and ¾ ounce egg white. Dry shake (do not add ice) for approximately 10-15 seconds. Add ice and shake for another 10-15 seconds. Discard ice from the chilled glass and strain the contents of the mixing glass into the chilled glass. Garnish with an organic red rose petal.
*As Navan vanilla-infused cognac liqueur is no longer readily available, you can try substituting Tuaca or Licor 43 vanilla-citrus liqueurs, but regarding the fresh citrus, Solano says, “there is never any substitution for fresh. Never!”
