A master class in juxtaposition, documentary film Re:Generation marries all the things you love about music with the people and sounds of another generation. The film, released in conjunction with the Grammys, where Skrillex took home the award for Best Dance/Electronica Album, follows five of today’s influential producers as they record tracks with unexpected guests in unfamiliar genres.
The film’s stars—Mark Ronson, Skrillex, The Crystal Method, DJ Premier and Pretty Lights—leave their musical comfort zones to work with unlikely collaborators. You get a behind-the-scenes look at them creating new tracks: Witness Electronic mainstay Pretty Lights recording the country twanging “Wayfaring Stranger” with LeAnn Rimes and Dr. Ralph Stanley, and hip-hop legend DJ Premier holding court with NAS and the Berklee Symphony Orchestra.
The film also features an exciting cast of musical stars from all genres, such as Erykah Badu, John Densmore of the Doors and drumming legend Zigaboo Modeliste. So even if you can’t stomach the dubstep wobbles of Skrillex or the guitar-driven country sound, the soundtrack has a little bit of
something to which with you can latch on.
