The desert has a strange power to provoke crazy dreams: The city we live in is Exhibit No. 1. We should never forget that once upon a time it all looked pretty much like this—a weird gesture on the sunbaked surface of forever. Photographer Paula Lawlor was hiking past an abandoned gypsum mine near the Mountain’s Edge development in the southwest Valley when she found this lonely bit of lawn art, far from its natural habitat but oddly right at home.
