UNLV went 14-2 in a wildly successful run through its non-conference schedule in the 2011-12 campaign, highlighted by a November victory over then-No. 1 North Carolina at the Orleans Arena.
The Tar Heels are back on the Rebels’ 2012-13 non-conference slate, which is nearing its completion.
In their second season under coach Dave Rice, the Rebels are already locked into 13 games before playing a 16-game Mountain West schedule — up from 14 games last season with the loss of TCU and the additions of Nevada-Reno and Fresno State.
UNLV is currently trying to schedule two more games for its non-conference slate. Here’s a look at the opponents already set:
• UNLV will play North Carolina in Chapel Hill, with the final weekend in December currently being looked at as a target date.
• The rest of the road portion of UNLV’s 2012-13 non-conference schedule currently includes games at Cal, at UTEP and at Portland — a game scheduled as a homecoming-type of trip for junior forward Mike Moser, an honorable mention All-American in 2011-12.
• UNLV’s current home schedule includes games against Northern Arizona, Jacksonville State, Hawaii, Canisius, Cal State Bakersfield and UC-Irvine. Also, the Rebels will host Northern Iowa as part of the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge, which is entering its final year.
• The home schedule is highlighted right now by a Thanksgiving weekend four-team tournament that includes UNLV, Iowa State, Cincinnati and Oregon. It’s not yet known who will play who to start the tournament on Friday at the Thomas & Mack Center.
