It seems almost unfathomable now, but above-ground atomic testing was a major Las Vegas tourist attraction in the 1950s, with mushroom clouds from the Nevada Test Site visible downtown. This article tells of the parties that surrounded the nuclear explosions, which were even promoted by the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce before testing went underground in 1963. As a bonus, this site includes video footage of downtown and the Strip from 1956. So grab an Atomic Cocktail, and raise your glass to an explosive era in Southern Nevada history.
