Free Money, Free Food, and Tacos in a Biker Bar

First, a few casinos launched $100-rebate-on-loss deals to stir up business. Then the Trop did ’em one better with a $200 offer. A couple of months later, the Palms upped the ante to $500. Now the Riviera is offering a $1,000 rebate on losses via the just announced “Grand Guarantee.” Under this deal, players can gamble on video poker or slots, lose up to $1,000 and get it all back. The rebates come in two installments—one the day you play, and the second on or after the 3rd of the following month. You have to be a new member of the Riviera players club to be eligible. Remember, the value in this is in the chance of hitting something big before you hit the rebate limit. So if you do, STOP.

• The bar Rounders serves half-price breakfasts from 8 a.m. to noon on weekends. There are about a dozen selections, including bacon and eggs, huevos rancheros, eggs Benedict, and steak and eggs, all served in huge portions, going for $3.50 to $6. Strong. The deal is available only at the Rounders at 4455 S. Buffalo Drive (not at the Blue Diamond location).

• After more than a decade at Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon, Big Elvis has moved to Harrah’s. I don’t know yet what Big E’s schedule will be at big H, but I know he puts on a good free show worth seeing.

• My ongoing search for foosball tables in Las Vegas has yielded two more finds—and at adjacent venues no less. At Mickey’s Cues & Brews pool hall (7380 S. Eastern Ave.), you get nine balls for 75 cents. But next door at Ballpark Lounge, you get nine for 50 cents. Mickey’s also has an unlimited-play deal for pool: $8 per person from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays (you must be 21).

• If you’ve spent any time in this town, you’ve done “Taco Tuesdays” … somewhere (since the bars here apparently can’t resist the alliteration). Any taco for a buck or less is good in my book, but the motherlode can be found at Mr. D’s (1810 S. Rainbow Blvd.). Homemade hard taco shells, shredded beef, fresh toppings—$1 apiece. Mr. D’s is a major biker bar, and they really roll in for these (and the regular Tuesday burlesque show). To avoid the zoo, go early (they begin serving at 5 p.m.), or on Mondays, when they run the same dollar deal, but not everyone knows it.

• There are always deals for Mother’s Day, but so far I’ve seen only one free-meal deal: free dinner and a corsage for all mothers and grandmothers on May 13 at Coconuts Beach Bar & Mexican Gril at Town Square.

My e-mail accounts look like the inside of my head: organized but overwhelmed, and filled with unimportant stuff that sometimes gets in the way of the stuff that I actually need. I don’t know why I signed up for all these e-mail newsletters from Amazon and Dell and so on, but now I get the damn things every single day and I pretty much ignore them all, even if I feel like I might actually want to buy something from one of those retailers.
