The Avengers

(PG-13) ★★★☆☆

Here it is. The great conjunction. The culmination of it all. The players: Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). Their nemesis: Thor’s evil brother, the god Loki (Tom Hiddleston), hellbent on conquering Earth. An enormously scaled blockbuster, the film is good, yet short of terrific. The banter is witty, the action immense, and there’s sure to be a sequel.

The Raven

(R) ★★☆☆☆ Quoth the raven: “Eh.” Someone in 1849 Baltimore is on a murder spree, riffing on methods of torture and execution depicted in the stories of Edgar Allan Poe (John Cusack), whom a local detective (Luke Evans) suspects. Poe’s intended (Alice Eve) believes in her man, certainly more than her disapproving father (Brendan Gleeson) does. While the setup has potential, the suspense and action sequences fail to engage. Cusack has his moments, but an overall yawner.
