In 1957, photographer Don English captured Lee A. Merlin, a showgirl from the Sands’ Copa Room, dressed in little more than a mushroom cloud. To commemorate the 55th anniversary of that iconic shot, the Las Vegas News Bureau recently enlisted the town’s 21st-century thermonuclear hottie, Holly Madison, as the new “Miss Atomic Bomb.”
In this behind-the-scenes shot, Madison strikes Merlin’s familiar pose as directed by artist Steven Liguori and photographed by Darrin Bush of the Las Vegas News Bureau. The bureau unveiled Bush’s photo—along with a bronze sculpture fashioned by Ligouri—at a Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce luncheon on May 9.
Here’s hoping this becomes a tradition. Our recommendation for the next re-creation: The famous photo of the Rat Pack on the lawn in front of the Sands. Makes you wonder: Which Rat Packer would Celine Dion portray?
