Five Great Vegas Milk Shakes

Vegas Seven’s food critic, Max Jacobson, picks his favorite summer indulgences:

Thrifty Ice Cream. The flavor of your choice, milk and whipped cream—that’s all. But it’s thick, rich and a great value. $4 (16 ounces), $5 (24 ounces), 2580 Wigwam Parkway, Henderson, 269-4141.

Bottles and Burgers’ Choco-Cherry Adult Milk Shake. Choco-Cherry vodka, chocolate ice cream, cherries. Plan on getting a small buzz from one. $9, in Tivoli Village, 420 S. Rampart Blvd., Suite 120, 431-5433.

Holsteins’ Black and White Malt. This is one of the few places that does malts properly. And they’ll give you all the malt you want, as it should be. $8, in the Cosmopolitan, 698-7940.

Bachi Burger’s Strawberry Guava Milk Shake. An exotic, tropical smoothie reminiscent of what you’d get on a Mexican beach. $5. 470 E. Windmill Lane, 242-2244, 9410 W. Sahara Ave, 255-3055.

CJ’s Vanilla Frozen Custard Milk Shake. We simply love the pure vanilla goodness. $4.25. 3555 S. Durango Drive, 240-1880.

Dr. Robert Belliveau sits hunched over a small white-plastic cutting board, kitchen knife in hand. He’s slicing a fresh green pepper into quarter-inch-long strips, and the earthy smell momentarily turns his lab into a kitchen. Belliveau selects a strip and flips it over, revealing the fleshy, moist, inner lining of the pepper, called the endocarp. That’s what he’s after. He trades the knife for a razor blade and hunches a little closer to his work. This is the tricky part, and it’s rare to get it right the first time.
