I try not to make a habit of betting on baseball teams that have just three wins in their last 11 games. I am, however, quick to bet on a team whose ace pitcher has a long history of dominating an opponent. To wit, check out the numbers Milwaukee right-hander Yovanni Gallardo has posted in seven career starts against the Diamondbacks: seven runs (five earned) allowed in 36 innings pitched (that’s a 1.25 ERA) with more strikeouts (37) than combined hits and walks allowed (36). The Brewers’ record in those seven contests: 7-0, including three victories in Arizona by the combined score of 23-5.
Not only has Gallardo owned the D-Backs, but he’s coming into this game on a roll, having delivered seven quality starts in his last eight trips to the mound (in those seven particular outings, Gallardo has a 2.40 ERA). Conversely, Arizona’s Ian Kennedy is in a funk, losing his last three starts while posting a 7.27 ERA. In fact, the D-Backs are winless in Kennedy’s last five trips to the hill, scoring just eight runs in the process. Which wouldn’t be a big deal if the D-Backs were winning the majority of their other games, but they’re not. Since May 2, Arizona is 7-14, including 2-7 at home.
