James Woods likes ’em short

Short-film festival Tropfest brought in a passel of Hollywood talent to judge all-star shorts from its 20-year history, up to and including Tobey “Why Wasn’t I Invited to the Spider-Man Reboot” Maguire and James “Could Be Worse, You Could’ve Been in the Remake for Straw DogsWoods.

The Daily Show’s Rob Corddry hosted the June 3 competition at the Cosmopolitan, while United States of Tara’s Toni Collette was president of a jury that included Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids), Anthony LaPaglia (Happy Feet), Griffin Dunne (An American Werewolf in London), Charles Randolph (Love and Other Drugs) and Sundance programmer Trevor Groth (formerly CineVegas’ artistic director).

Winning flick The Story of Bubble Boy was not, in fact, a documentary about the making of the 2001 Jake Gyllenhaal movie Bubble Boy. If Woods and Maguire left in a huff of false-advertising indignation, who could blame them?

First he told fans to “Put Your Hands Up” for your favorite city. He then encouraged us to get “Freaky,” among other lushly saturated electro-goodness offerings. Dutch dance-music maestro Fedde le Grand still has a handle on keeping it fresh in an often formulaic world. Coming in at No. 14 on DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs poll, and with two new International Dance Music Awards, he’ll be rocking it next at Electric Daisy Carnival on June 8 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
