Big River Revival

Those talented kids at the Las Vegas Academy of International Studies, Performing and Visual Arts are at it again. The magnet high school’s Theatre Department will be taking its sixth production to the International Thespian Society’s annual festival in Lincoln, Neb., June 25-30. Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn originally ran in November, and was chosen as a Mainstage Selection for the festival. But before they go, the approximately 100 students involved need a helping hand from the community. To raise funds so all of the participating cast and crew can make the journey, Las Vegas Academy presents a special revival of Big River at 7 p.m. June 20-22 in the school’s Lowden Theater for the Performing Arts (9th Street and Clark Avenue).

The atmosphere must have been electric. Million Dollar Quartet, the hit Broadway show based on Elvis’ other notable confab, comes to The Smith Center on June 12-17 ($24-$129). It should be fun to watch actors rip through classics such as “Hound Dog” and “Folsom Prison Blues” as they re-create the monumental 1956 recording session of Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis.
