Brave

(PG) ★★★☆☆

Pixar’s latest is an eyeful, a gorgeous if awkwardly plotted Scottish adventure. Young Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) is preparing for an arranged marriage to one of three suitors representing clans of the kingdom ruled by her father, King Fergus (Billy Connolly). But she runs off on her own, coming into contact with a witch (Julie Walters) who turns Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson) into a bear. Pixar still reigns supreme, and the film is gorgeous, but this isn’t one of their masterpieces.

(PG-13) ★★☆☆☆ The year is 1987; the place is L.A.’s Bourbon Room, whose debaucheries have drawn the ire of the clean-it-up! Mayor’s wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones). All is riding on soul-spent rocker Stacie Jaxx (Tom Cruise). While the owner (Alec Baldwin) frets, young love blooms between two employees (Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta). While Cruise is certainly a sight, there’s something off in director Adam Shankman’s tone and pacing, leaving this a long way from true, trashy exhilaration.
