Drop the Lime Enter the Night (Ultra)

Picture a spaghetti Western neon paintball shoot-out in the middle of a dirty dive bar on a laser-filled beach party theme night. In the corner, a drugstore cowboy cues up Enter the Night on the jukebox to set the mood. This album has everything: doo-wop, electro, foot-stomping rockabilly, techno, rock, surf guitar, David Bowie-esque vocals, minimal—oh, and a Bruce Springsteen cover (“State Trooper”). With all that, one might expect a total cacophony, but NYC-based singer/songwriter/DJ/producer Drop the Lime (born Luca Venezia) manages to cultivate it all into an extremely pleasing aural experience. ★★★★☆

Smashing Pumpkins Oceania (Martha’s Music)

Damn it, Billy Corgan. We were really pulling for ya on Smashing Pumpkins’ seventh studio album and usually worship everything you do. Unfortunately, Oceania is almost too bland and boring to listen to. Recorded at Corgan’s private studio with whatever musicians are in the band this year (OK, they are guitarist Jeff Schroder, bassist/vocalist Nicole Fiorentino and drummer Mike Byrne), the 13 tracks muddle together into a thoroughly unimpressive, forgettable, cliché LP only worth checking out via Spotify once just to say you did. ★☆☆☆☆

Rebecca & Fiona I Love You, Man (Ultra)

Swedish sensations Rebecca & Fiona continue to dispel the notion they’re just an adorable duo who sings on Kaskade’s “Turn it Down.” On their North American debut album, solid production and catchy hooks (often provided by the girls themselves) run the gamut of danceable tunes. At times, the vocals are a little too cutesy and airy; the listener may be begging for bold belting by the end. However, one can hear the potential for any of the 13 tracks to be remixed into full-on club-bangers, thus giving the tunes an extra life. ★★☆☆☆

JULY 31: Not gonna lie, we haven’t even thought about the Toadies since “Possum Kingdom” was all over the radio in 1994 … and then periodically in rotation on adult-contemporary stations. Turns out they broke up, got back together and they’ve got Play.Rock.Music up next. AUG. 14: Finally, an excuse to drink all that Faygo we stocked up on in case Insane Clown Posse came back to Vegas. The release of The Mighty Death Pop! is good enough to shower your friends with the notoriously sticky soda. AUG. 28: Kind of disappointed in the title of the next offering from Minus the Bear, i.e. Infinity Overhead. They’re usually so much cleverer. OCT. 23: Just in time for Halloween where all things ’80s will likely abound, Shiny Toy Guns releases more electro-clash synth pop via III.
