Best Defenders of the (So-Called) Wasteland

Too many Southern Nevadans see the desert only from their car windows. To them, it all looks the same: boundless horizons of scrub and barren mountains. Why bother to protect it? Enter Outside Las Vegas Foundation. This nonprofit organization, formed in 2000, knows that to get close to our unique environment is to love it, from the alpine feeling of the Spring Mountains to the wide-open desert vistas of the Desert National Wildlife Refuge. That’s why Outside Las Vegas has championed the creation of the Vegas Valley Rim Trail, which was christened in January. One day soon you’ll be able to hike the Valley in an unbroken 100-mile loop, learning to love it more with every step.
