Best Dentist on a Mission

After her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, Dr. Olya Banchik, a Russian native who began practicing dentistry in Las Vegas in 2003, became more aware of the side effects caused by cancer treatment. Most people expect chemotherapy to lead to nausea and hair loss, but it can also cause painful oral sores, gum complications and tooth decay.

In fact, 40 percent of breast cancer patients suffer mouth problems when the chemo knocks out cells in the digestive system. So Dr. Banchik sprang into action, establishing Smiles for Survivors, a nonprofit that, for three years now, has been helping cancer patients get the care they need to save their mouths, so that treatment can save their lives.
