Tough Mudder typifies the workout du jour: grueling, yet fun; requiring enormous dedication, but with motivational tools built in; basic training-like tasks, performed by people in capes, pink wigs and tutus. “It’s huge,” says local fitness expert Branden Collinsworth of Jump for Joy and Real Results. “Lots of people are preparing for the one coming up here [Oct. 6-7].” Tough Mudder’s appeal, he explains, is its focus on community. Sure, people sign up for 10 miles of carrying giant logs on their shoulders, crawling through mud and wading through ice water, but they also get months of preparation with fellow mudders, who bond not only in the dirt but also at, where advice, encouragement and personal stories abound.
