Everyone involved in operating Milagros Escondidos has a separate full-time job, but they’re still fully devoted to the mission: supporting parents whose children have just been diagnosed with developmental disabilities. This support group was co-founded 10 years ago by Norma Gomez (above right), an early-childhood special-education specialist who sets up monthly workshops and support groups for parents. Since then, it’s gone from helping a handful of parents to hosting meetings that have been known to draw up to 40 families. Plus, Milagros offers Spanish-language support, which taps into a community that has long needed more outreach.
