Creativity and guts. That’s the happily explosive combination James Canfield uses to light the fire under the dancers of the Nevada Ballet Theatre as their artistic director. Traditionalist? Sure. Few are as appreciative of the legendary George Balanchine, whose ballets regularly grace NBT’s schedule. Yet Canfield’s outside-the-box thinking—using singer Matt Goss to complement his troupe at The Smith Center, and creating originals such as Up, set to seven versions of “Blue Moon,” from Billie Holiday to the Cowboy Junkies—gives NBT a big leg up on the ballet barre.
